The Osteoporosis Foundation recommends that you consider calcium supplements. Two tablets a day is all it takes. Experts recommend 1000 mg of calcium a day under the age of menopause and 1200 - 1500 mg per day for postmenopausal women.)
Estrogen minimizes the amount of new bone cells that die each month and is effective in preventing osteoporosis and restoring some bone loss. Experts consider estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) as first-line treatment for women who need relief of menopausal symptoms and who need protection against osteoporosis. Some forms of ERT can prevent bone loss, especially for women who have had a hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries and post-menopausal women. Estrogen plays a vital role in keeping bones strong. Because estrogen causes bone to absorb calcium from the blood and slows the loss of calcium from bone, doctors usually prescribe ERT at menopause. It’s never too late to start ERT for protection against osteoporosis—whether you start at menopause or as late as age 65.
Other osteoporosis prescription medications that are used for osteoporosis prevention and treatment include: estrogens, bisphosphonates, calcitonin, etridronate and raloxifene.
