Estragen plays a vital role in keeping bones healthy. Estragen causes bone to absorb calcium from the blood and slows the loss of calcium from bone. When estragen is no longer available in your body due to natural menopause or surgical menopause, there is a marked increase in the amount of bone that is lost. This loss can cause total bone mass to diminish by as much as 40% to 50%, often resulting in osteoporosis.
