Osteoparosis is characterized by decreased bone density and a thinning of the bones, which can develop when estrogen levels decline. It affects 25 million Americans, 80% of whom are women. One of every two women will have an osteoporotic related fracture in her lifetime. Almost 25% of women 50 years or older with a hip fracture will die in the year following their fracture. Osteoparosis is a preventable disease. It is important to know your risk factors, and discuss with your doctor ways to detect osteoparosis through bone density testing, blood and urine tests, and a height measurement test.
