No one standard definition for complementary and/or alternitive medicine exists. But in general, complementary and alternitive medicine refers to practices that aren't integral parts of conventional medicine, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternitive Medicine. What is or isn't considered complementary and alternitive changes constantly as an increasing number of treatments undergo rigorous study and are proved to be effective or not.
Alternitive approaches are generally thought of as being used instead of conventional methods. For example, this might mean seeing a homeopath or naturopath instead of your regular doctor.
