The #1 killer of both men and women in the US is heart disease? In fact, except during the 1918 flu pandemic, cardiovascular disease has been the No. 1 killer in the United States every year for more than a century. It claims more lives than the next 4 leading causes of death COMBINED- cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, accidents, and diabetes mellitus. Surprisingly, 50% of men and 64% of women who died suddenly from CHD had no previous symptoms of the disease. And the direct and indirect cost of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in the United States are significant- for 2006 it is estimated at $403.1 billion.
But, there is Good News: As sobering as these facts are, there are a number of things you can do to help control heart disease.
Eating a balanced diet that is low in saturated fat is a great start.
Maintaining a reasonable bodyweight is also critical for controling not only heart disease but many other diseases as well.
Make sure you are doing at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day.
If you smoke, stop.
Avoid excessive drinking.
And make sure you maintain a health dental program- it could help prevent infection that can lead to inflammation that could affect the heart.
