Cholestrol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is present in your cells. Some cholestrol is needed for your body to function. Cholestrol is produced by the liver which produces enough cholestrol for your body. Some foods provide additional amounts of cholestrol, which may be more than your body needs.
While some cholestrol in your blood is necessary to your health, too much can be harmful. If your cholestrol level is high, it increases your risk of heart disease. There are many reasons for a high cholestrol level. These include diet and family history. Obesity or some diseases such as diabetes can also contribute to a high cholestrol level.
