I had Lasik 6 years ago and hadn't been back to the eye doctor since then. My eyesight has been great until recently. Seems like overnight I can't read road signs, driving at night is just about impossible. My doctor ran some tests to see if I would be a good candidate for an enhancement to my Lasik procedure. After the tests he told me I have the early stages of cataracs forming on both eyes. I am 45 years old and a recovering alcoholic. I was sober for 3 years and in October, 2006 I relapsed and am now back in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous and maintaining my sobriety. My new sobriety date is January 6, 2007. I did not know alcoholism and diabetes can cause cataracs. Diabetes runs in my family. It makes sense though since problems with my eyesight immediately began after I got sober from this last relapse. What else should I know about cataracs and what should I do? My doctor told me it can take years for them to fully form. At this time we are going to try a contac lens on my right eye to see if that balances my nearsightedness enough for my satisfaction. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
