Artherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries is more common among men and women over the age of 55. It is caused by a malfunction of one or more of the bodies systems. It is caused by cholesterol rich plaques in the arterial cells. Risk factors can be high levels of cholesterol, high blood pressure and cigarette smoke. The only treatment, which is tenuous at best, is to use blood thinners.
